Are you looking for outdoor recreation in the neighbourhood of Vancouver BC, Canada ? The Whyak Outdoor Club engages in walks, rambles, day hikes, and occasional backpacking, skiing, camping, picnics, and bicycling.

WHYAK is an aboriginal word meaning "high places". We are an outdoor activity club run entirely by volunteers, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. People join the club to socialize, to increase safety by hiking in groups, to share knowledge of the various trails accessible from Vancouver, and to reduce trip costs through car-pooling. Activities are determined by the coordinators who volunteer to plan and organize them. Most activities run on a Saturday or Sunday, require one day, and involve walking or hiking. Sometimes overnight trips are organized. Other activities include occasional backpacking, car camping, skiing (downhill or cross-country), swimming, skating, bicycling, theatre, picnics, or dinners. WHYAK is a mix of women, men, singles and couples, aged from 20 to 60 but averaging 40-something. About half the members have vehicles. Members without vehicles usually live not too far from one of our primary meeting spots within town. We are most active during sunny summer weekends, but still venture out during the rainy autumn and winter seasons. Our day-trip excursions range from Whistler in the north, to Chilliwack in the east, to Mt. Baker in the south, and to Bowen Island in the west. We do quite a few day hikes among the North Shore mountains and valleys.

Club membership ranges from 30 to 100 people (when it gets too low then we do more recruiting). On any one day we might see from 2 to 30 people taking part, but numbers can be limited by the coordinator to minimize congestion on trails, on hilltops, and in restaurants. Most weekends feature only one activity. Guests are welcome, but please give coordinators some advance indication of how many people are coming. This is a very casual club, not at all like the army.

New members are welcome (to replace old members who drift away). Membership is $10.00 per year and helps cover the cost of printing and mailing the bi-monthly programmes and the cost of occasional club meetings and recruitment ads
